CASPER, Wyo. It's called the "Tax Transcript Scam."
Scammers impersonating businesses and organizations, sending malware through email.
The file in the email appears to be a transcript or an overview of your tax return but spreads a malware virus once opened.
The malware is harmful to computers, especially those on a large network.
"It's a year-round thing. I've had clients come in during off tax season saying we've got this phone call." Explained Paget Rohrer, a local tax analyst. "So I have phone calls from clients saying 'We got this phone call. We just want to double check. We think it's not legitimate, but we just want to double check."
The IRS reminds us they will never send unsolicited or sensitive documents by email.
