Latest Wolf Decsion Reactions
January 23, 2009
Reported by Natalie Paterson
The decision to keep the gray wolf on the endangered species list in Wyoming...has led to strong reactions from hunters and ranchers.
There are close to 300 gray wolves in the cowboy state right now, 175 of them outside Yellowstone National Park. Under the current rule...ranchers cannot shoot a wolf unless its attacking livestock on private property. Many land owners are concerned that they will not be able to protect their livelihood unless they have the right to shoot a wolf on sight.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a rancher is able to chase a wolf off private property as long as they don't injure the animal. Under the current rule...no person is allowed to shoot a wolf that is attacking a dog on private property. Ranchers can contact Mike Jimenez at the Fish and Wildlife Service in Jackson is they see a wolf on their property or if a wolf has attacked their livestock. Live stock includes horses, sheep, cattle and mules.
