Emergency steps are being taken in Casper to protect the North Platte River, after a risk of equipment failure at the city's wastewater treatment plant.
City officials are asking for the help of residents and business owners.
A possible equipment failure could result in a direct discharge and contamination into the North Platte River
According to the city's public services department, 2 of the plant's screw pumps have had problems and are expected to be replaced in October.
Until then, the city is relying on a 3rd screw pump, but within the last week, cracks have been identified on it, leading some to worry about possible failure.
A new pump has been ordered and is expected to be up and running by Saturday (May 31st), but until then, the city needs everyone's help.
Gary Clough, Casper Public Services Department: "We're asking now for the help of our residents and small businesses within the community what you can do to reduce your waste water flows."
Some of the ways to help reduce the use of waste water include delaying laundry and dishwashing until Sunday (June 1st), if possible, avoid draining pools and hot tubs, take showers instead of baths, and keep them brief.
Also, reduce the amount of times you flush the toilet.
City Officials say, they are also making cuts on the amount of waste water used within the city and surrounding communities.
