Fremont County School District #25 in Riverton received a waiver over class sizes from the Wyoming Department of Education, but board members said they plan to continue efforts to reduce class size.
The Department of Education granted waivers to schools not in compliance with the 16:1 student to teacher mandate for grades K-3. Superintendent Terry Snyder said a district can receive a waiver if there is evidence for progress towards reaching the mandate or if students have high achievement. Riverton has made efforts to obtain the requirement, but space is an issue.
"Our capacity is full,” said Snyder. “We our working very rapidly to try to get a new elementary school built and we're looking forward to that."
Meanwhile, the district has hired more teachers. The district was 25 to 1 three years ago and now is 18 to 1. Additionally, modular classrooms have been added and children relocated to Rendezvous Elementary School.
