Gas plant explosion causes fire, evacuates town of Opal

An explosion and subsequent fire at a gas plant near Opal temporarily closed down two Wyoming roads and evacuated the nearby town Wednesday.

The southwest Wyoming town, not far from Kemmerer, has some 96 residents who were evacuated to an area about 3 miles outside of town as a precaution, but a Lincoln County spokesman says no injuries have been reported and all employees are accounted for.

One witness was 300 yards away from the Williams Gas Plant when he heard a loud gas release then all of a sudden saw a ball of fire go up. He and his co-workers ran for their trucks, and he says they could feel the heat on their faces from the explosion.

A Williams representative says they believe the explosion occurred in one of 5 processing machines at the site.
