In about a week a Wyoming veteran will be receiving a Purple Heart award for his bravery and sacrifice.
This is one of the military's highest honors.
Technical Sergeant Douglas Gerald Smits will receive the award this upcoming Friday.
In 2007 Smits and his team were injured during a mission when an explosive device struck their truck, but even after getting seriously injured he continued saving other members of his team.
The incident occurred during his second deployment where he served as an explosive ordinance disposal team member.
Smits said he feels honored for getting the opportunity to receive this award.
“It's extremely humbling to get it, so it goes back to really amazing Americans, so it feels pretty cool to be a part of something like that."
This will be the second Purple Heart awarded to a member of the Smits family and the ceremony takes place next Friday, January 5th at the FE Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne.
