State lawmakers are considering increasing the cigarette tax.
The legislature's Revenue Committee decided to proceed with their decision to increase the tax on cigarettes, one dollar per pack and ten dollars per carton.
Reports show Representative Cathy Connolly said the bill would raise the cigarette tax to about the national average, generating 26-million dollars for the state each year.
The state’s current 60-cent cigarette tax is lower than every neighboring state except Idaho.
The committee decides whether they will recommend it to the full legislature in December.
