Last week 58 Wyoming Medical Center employees were laid off. Many are looking for a job in the same field, but some are considering another career altogether.
Meri Thompson of Wyoming Workforce Services said that so far, only a few former WMC employees have utilized their resources. “As of today,” she said, “we've seen just a handful of individuals from Wyoming Medical Center come into our offices to either apply for unemployment benefits or to talk to us about Wyoming at Work and how to use it to their benefit.”
Wyoming at Work is a self-service website to find jobs. Thompson says there may be others who haven't come in because it is accessible anywhere from a computer with internet. But for those laid off there are options.
"Wyoming at Work is one of the largest employer-based websites out there for job seekers to be able to determine what jobs might be available in their area," Thompson said.
People can look for jobs statewide or in their county, and there are plenty of jobs in the medical field.
"The medical field is still a growing industry,” Thompson offered, ”so if anybody is needing assistance with Wyoming at Work and how to use it to their advantage, we'd be happy to help in our office."
Laid-off Wyoming Medical staff were granted a compensation package including up to 60 days of pay, which could be another reason more of those employees haven't come in to use state employment services.
Mountain View Regional Hospital staff say 11 former WMC employees have come in or have interviews scheduled.
For those looking for work, there will be a weekend career symposium at the Casper Workforce Center continuing for six weeks this summer, starting June 27th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Additionally, the Center will hold two career assessment workshops on June 22nd. The first one is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the second is from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information call Wyoming Workforce Services at 307-234-4591.
