Former Senator Simpson Talks Compromise to Pass a Successful Health Care Bill

Retired Wyoming Senator Al Simpson said the Republicans need to work with Democrats to pass a successful health care bill.

Simpson said Obamacare is failing because the Democrats didn’t work with Republicans. In a recent interview on civility, we asked if lawmakers can get anything done if they work with people across the aisle. He answered, you don’t get anything done if you don’t work with people across the aisle in Congress.

Simpson said, “That’s why Obamacare, forever, its attributes are failures, it’s never going to work because it didn’t have a single vote from the other side of the aisle. And if Republicans are going to go ahead and do something that doesn’t have a single vote from somebody on the other side of the aisle, it will fail. That’s just how this works.”

Simpson served Wyoming in the U.S. Senate from 1979 to 1997.

He also co-chaired the bi partisan commission that produced the Simpson-Bowles Report on fiscal responsibility.
